HIST. PERIOD:

Seven Years War

RULES SYSTEM:

Old Dessauer

MINIATURES:

15mm

NO. OF PLAYERS:

4 to 6

PRESENTED BY:

Wes Rogers

DESCRIPTION:

This is a hypothetical scenario set in July, 1757. The Prussians under Frederick have been retreating slowly north after their defeat at Kolin. On 16 July a detached Prussian force under the brave but inexperienced Prince August William stumbles into an Austrian blocking force under Nadasty at Lobau. Nadasty is an aggressive commander and his troops have out-marched the Prussians (as well as his own main army). August William is trapped. The Prussians have better troops, but must drive across a strongly-held Austrian ridgeline to reach their main army at Bautzen to the north. Failure means disgrace and dismissal from the army; Frederick does not have a sympathetic nature. The rules are 1:50 scale, with very simple game mechanics, suitable for those new to this fascinating period or to wargaming in general.

DESCRIPTION:

This scenario is played with tanks at a one to one scale. Yes, that's more than 600 tanks in this scenario, lots of infantry, and it will be done in one period. The German SS was the tip of one of the spearheads to encircle the Soviet army. The Soviets had been fortifying for months, and these regiments had spent seven days destroying seven layers of fortifications and obliterating the rifle divisions in them. The hard part was over and they had less than 20 KM to go to encircle one million Soviet troops. The 1st SS Panzergrenadier regiment started up at 6 a.m. and advanced 2km by 8 a.m. while destroying a Soviet airborne regiment. They then called up their 67 tank panzer regiment and started to advance thinking that today the circle will be closed. The Soviets counterattacked them with their last reserves, 500 tanks and unending waves of infantry. Three times the Soviets broke through and three times they were driven back. At the end of the day 30 German tanks were destroyed and 192 Soviet tanks were destroyed. The Germans lost less than 400 men. It was a great tactical victory for the SS that day but a strategic disaster since the German offensive was over.

HIST.
