Enfilade 2005 Painting Competition

As usual, this year's Enfilade will feature a painting competition. It's our annual display of talent within the organization and a chance for you to show off what you can do and to admire the work of others.

The painting competition will be held on Saturday this year. Display and judging will be in the morning and afternoon and winners will be announced and awarded their prizes in the evening.

Entries need to be entered by 12:00 noon on Saturday. Judging will start at 2:00.

This year we will have a departure from our usual format. Instead of having attendees cast ballots for their favorites, we will have a three-judge panel deciding by mutual consent on the winner for each category. We hope this will make for a better competition since our judges—all experienced painters themselves—can be more objective in determining the best entry in each category.

Painting Competition Categories

We've tried to make this open enough to include a lot of different kinds of entries, but there's no way to be exhaustive without making the painting competition a weekend event in itself. The plethora of scales is daunting, so we've decided to limit splitting scales to just two: 20mm and smaller, 25mm and larger. Also, this split will only be reflected in three categories. All other categories are open for every scale.

The categories this year are:

Vignette
This category covers any single base with five (5) or less figures. Command groups, vignette scenes, and single figures are all valid entries. This category is divided into two sub-categories: 20mm and smaller, 25mm and larger.

Infantry
Any dismounted unit that consists of 10 to 48 figures. This category is divided into two sub-categories: 20mm and smaller, 25mm and larger.

Cavalry
Any mounted unit that consists of 6 to 24 figures. This category is divided into two sub-categories: 20mm and smaller, 25mm and larger.

Artillery and Engines of War
Any kind of war engine such as artillery, battering rams, war-elephants, or siege towers are valid entries. Artillery can be a single gun and crew or a whole battery. This category covers all eras from ancient to modern and is open to all scales.

Vehicle
This category covers any kind of military ground vehicle from chariots to tanks. This category is open to all scales.

Aircraft
This category covers all military aircraft in any scale.

Naval
This category covers all vessels of war from ancient galleys to modern guided-missile frigates in all scales.

Open
The open category covers everything that doesn't fit into another category, for example, sci-fi or fantasy. This category is open to all scales.

Youth Open
This is an open category for all painters under 18. All scales and all types of entry are accepted.

In all cases where an entry is ambiguous, placement within a category will be determined by the painting competition administrator (that's me).

Members' Choice Award

There will be one award given that is based on a ballot vote by all attendees (voting is not restricted to NHMGS members, even though the award is called "members' choice"). The winner of the Members' Choice Award can be from any category as chosen by the majority of the attendees voting.
